The Kansas City, Clinton and Springfield Railway ("KCC&SR"), also known as the Leaky Roof Railway, was a consolidation of earlier railroads. As of 1917, it had a mainline running from Ash Grove, Missouri through Clinton, Missouri to Olathe, Kansas , almost 155 miles.

The water gauge station is a small (8 feet by 8 feet) two-story tower of random cut stone construction with a pyramidal roof and round-arched window openings.

Construction continued until at least 1960 and was never formally completed. The owners lived in the house for about 40 years (Ruth died in 1992). The house features parallelograms; indeed, the only right angles to be found in the house are located in the bathroom. Even the bed is a parallelogram and sheets must be custom made.
