Edward George Kingsford (March 1, 1862 – July 19, 1943) was an American timber cruiser, real estate developer, and automotive executive, who became the authorized representative for the Ford Motor Company and developed the Ford factory in what would later become Kingsford, Michigan; the town is named for Kingsford.
The township is south of the center of Menominee County. The city of Stephenson is surrounded by the western part of the township. U.S. Route 41 passes through the township and city, leading south 21 miles (34 km) to Menominee, the county seat, and north 20 miles (32 km) to Powers.
The cities of Iron Mountain and Kingsford are in the southwest of the township, but are administratively autonomous. East Kingsford is a part of the Kingsford urban area, located in the township just east of the city boundary at 45°47′42″N 88°03′52″W / 45.79500°N 88.06444°W / 45.79500; -88.
