K-254 westbound. K-254 begins at an interchange with I-135, I-235, US-81, K-15 and K-96 in Wichita and begins travelling east. It soon crosses Middle Fork Chisholm Creek then reaches an interchange with 45th Street North and Hillside Street.

The prior alignment ran from where current US-81 breaks off for Interstate 135 at 47th street, north through Wichita along Broadway street. Old US-81 roughly parallels Interstate 135 to Newton. Old US-81 follows current K-15 through Newton between an interchange with US-50 and Hesston Road, where old US-81 breaks northwest onto Hesston road.
In Pratt, US-54 originally overlapped US-281 from 5th Street to 1st Street. Then in a January 4, 1956 resolution, US-54 was realigned to cross US-281 and follow 1st Street. [14] In a December 22, 1958 resolution, a four miles (6.4 km) section of I-70 was planned along with a diamond interchange to connect to US-281. [15]
