The Durham Performing Arts Center (often called the DPAC) opened November 30, 2008 as the largest performing arts center in the Carolinas at a cost of $48 million. [1] The DPAC hosts over 200 performances a year including touring Broadway productions, high-profile concert and comedy events, family shows and the American Dance Festival .
From Marty McFly and Doc Brown to Mrs. Peacock and Col. Mustard, the Durham Performing Arts Center’s 2024-25 Truist Broadway season features some new takes on iconic characters.
Chris and Ann Reyes Organ and Choral Hall: an 80-seat room that features a handcrafted pipe organ built by Paul Fritts, which weighs 10,000 pounds, has 35 stops, and contains 2,551 pipes. This is a list of seating capacities for sports and entertainment arenas in the United States with at least 1,000 seats. The list is composed mostly of arenas that house sports teams (basketball, ice hockey, arena soccer and arena football) and serve as indoor venues for concerts and expositions.
Some of the above venues have hosted some of the largest crowds in history for indoor sports. The Caesars Superdome, for example, regularly seats more than 70,000 for basketball games (NCAA and NBA). The largest confirmed attendance for a basketball game (108,713) was at AT&T Stadium (then known as Cowboys Stadium) for the 2010 NBA All-Star Game.
More than 410 workdays followed: 300 workers clocked 136,000 hours to complete the 5,103-seat, 10-story amphitheater (original layout of the venue did not include a festival lawn; the lawn, which holds 20,000, was added later). [1] Harry Belafonte was the first non-classical performer to perform at SPAC, in 1967.
The venue features a 2,700-seat amplified hall, Walt Disney Theater, for Broadway musicals and multi-genre concerts as well as a 300-seat venue, Alexis & Pugh Theater, for smaller shows and events. [3] The third theater, Steinmetz Hall, a 1,700-seat multiform theater achieves an N1 sound rating–the highest possible acoustical rating.
The Carolina Theatre downtown had only 1,100 seats. A preliminary study recommended a performing arts center with 1,700 to 2,000 seats, and a smaller 500-seat facility. The study also said the city had enough events for both existing and new facilities. Arts leaders wanted a more detailed study. [10]
