Boonwurrung is one of the Kulin languages, and belongs to the Pama-Nyungan language family. [4] The ethnonym occasionally used in early writings to refer to the Bunwurrung, namely Bunwurru, is derived from the word bu:n, meaning "no" and wur:u, signifying either "lip" or "speech". [5]

The Woiwurrung tribes would have been aware of the Europeans, through the close relationship to the Boon wurrung people of the coast who came into contact with the Baudin expedition on the French ship Naturaliste during 1801, and then the British settlement at Sullivan Bay in 1803, near modern-day Sorrento, Victoria.
Boonwurrung, Woiwurrung and Taungurung have been considered by linguists to be dialects of a single Central Victorian Language (see:) and indeed, Boonwurrung shares 93% of its vocabulary with Woiwurrung (as opposed to 83% between Woiwurrung and Taungurung which are both covered in this page) (see:).
