The Battle of Ia Drang (Vietnamese: Trận Ia Đrăng, [iə̯ ɗrăŋ]; in English / ˈ iː ə d r æ ŋ /) was the first major battle between the United States Army and the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN), as part of the Pleiku campaign conducted early in the Vietnam War, at the eastern foot of the Chu Pong Massif in the central highlands of Vietnam, in 1965.

The Chu Pong Massif was the site of the 1965 Battle of Ia Drang during the Vietnam War. [4] In March 1966 US Armed Forces conducted Operation Hot Tip, one of a series of deforestation efforts through firebombing, targeting the Chu Pong Massif because it had been used as a base by Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces.

[3] At the Battle of Ia Drang in 1965, 450 troops of the 7th Cavalry Regiment fought some 2,000 soldiers of the People's Army of Vietnam, the first major battle of the war between U.S. and North Vietnamese forces. [2] Plumley fought at Landing Zone X-Ray, where 79 American soldiers were killed. [4]
It was assigned – on 26 October – by the II Corps Command to the 1st Air Cavalry Division with the mission to pursue the enemy into the Ia Drang-Chu Pong complex. The ARVN Airborne Brigade was put on the standby as reserved force during the Chu Pong phase, until it became the main force during the Ia Drang phase. [30]
