In 1959 Seiko placed an order with Epson (a subsidiary company of Seiko and the 'brain' behind the quartz revolution) to start developing a quartz wristwatch. The project was codenamed 59A. In 2019, Seiko released several limited edition Astron models to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the quartz Astron.
