Smilax illinoensis , the Illinois greenbrier, [1] is a North American species of plants found only in the United States and Canada. It is native primarily to the Great Lakes Region with a few populations further south in Missouri and in the Ohio Valley .

The living collections include more than 4,100 different plant species. There are more than 200,000 cataloged plants. [6]
The flowers are white with five small petals, produced in terminal cymes 4–8 cm (1 + 1 ⁄ 2 –3 in) in diameter. The fruit is a small red to purple-black drupe 4–8 millimetres (1 ⁄ 8 – 3 ⁄ 8 in) long. The shrub often suckers and can form a colony in time.
