According to the intergovernmental International Nickel Study Group, in 2017 the countries with the largest volume of nickel ore reserves are Australia (19.5 million metric tons), Brazil (10.5 million metric tons), Russia (7.5 million metric tons), New Caledonia (6.5 million metric tons), Cuba (5.5 million metric tons), and the Philippines (just under 5 million metric tons). Jefferson nickels have been minted since 1938 at the Philadelphia and Denver mints and from the San Francisco mint until 1970. Key dates for the series include the 1939-D, and 1950-D nickels. The 1939-D nickel with a mintage of 3,514,000 coins is the second lowest behind the 1950-D nickel.

While 2019, saw 6,130,000 tonnes of ore produced, with copper grades of 2.67% and nickel grades of 2.68%. [20] Ore is processed off site at Vale's Clarabelle Mill for nickel and copper, and the platinum group element (PGE) intermediates are sent to Vale's processing facility in Port Colborne, Ontario. The first nickel smelter was built in 1879 with two other added in 1910 and 1913. The smelted product contained about 70–80% nickel and was sent for refining to France. Because of low nickel content in the ore, local smelting resulted in vast amount of displaced rocks near the smelters that changed the local landscape. [6]
The first Nickel mines in Western Australia were developed in the late 1960s in Kambalda, [5] Laverton and the Kimberley region of Western Australia.. The price of nickel peaked at about £7,000 per pound in late 1969, driven by demand from the Vietnam War and the major Canadian producer, Inco (now Vale Canada), being embroiled in industrial action, creating a supply shortage.
