They are grouped as part of Ga-Adangbe ethnolinguistic group and they are also the largest group of the seven Dangme ethnic groups of Southeastern Ghana. The Ngmayem Festival is an annual harvest festival celebrated by the chiefs and peoples of Manya Krobo in the Eastern Region of Ghana.The festival was established by Nene Azu Mate Kole in 1944 [1] to replace the already existing festival called Yeliyem, which literary means "eating of yam".
The rite is performed by the people of Odumase Krobo in the Eastern region of Ghana. [2] The rite is performed in April every year. [ 2 ] It is used to usher virgin girls into puberty or womanhood, [ 3 ] and signifies that a participating girl is of age to be married. [ 4 ]
Nene Sakite I (died in 1892 in Odumase Krobo) was the second Konor, or paramount chief, of the Manya Krobo and reigned 1867 until his death in 1892. [1] [2] He was succeeded by Emmanuel Mate Kole who ruled Manya Krobo from 1892 until his death in 1939. He was born in Odumase Krobo in the Eastern Region of Ghana.
The original name for the people of Ningo is Lasibi. [9] This is part of the eight groups of people who are identified as Dangme State: Adaa, Nugo, Gbugbla, Kpom, SƐ, Yilô-Klo, Manya-Klo and Osudoku; anglicised as: Ada, Ningo, Prampram, Kpone, Shai, Yilo Krobo, Manya Krobo and Osudoku respectively.
