National Highway 166E, commonly referred to as NH 166E is a national highway in India. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] It is a spur road of National Highway 66 . [ 3 ] NH-166E traverses the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka in India.
The road, a state highway, is at an average elevation of 625 m (2,051 ft). It links the cities of Chiplun (Ratnagiri district) and Karad (Satara district). Near the eastern end is the Koyna Dam .
At 5,846 kilometres (3,633 mi), it is the largest highway project in India and the fifth longest in the world. [1] It is the first phase of the National Highways Development Project (NHDP), and consists of two, four, and six-lane express highways, built at a cost of ₹ 600 billion (US$6.9 billion). [ 2 ]

Chhattisgarh state has over 20 national highways with total length of 512 km and many state highways with total length of 4,136.85 km. [1] The state highways are arterial routes of a state, linking district headquarters and important towns within the state and connecting them with national highways or Highways of the neighboring states.
At the 2011 India census, [6] Chiplun had a population of 55,139 of which 27,355 are males while 27,784 are females as per the report released by Census India 2011. Literacy rate of Chiplun city is 93.92%, higher than the state average of 82.34%. In Chiplun, male literacy is around 96.50%, while female literacy is at 91.42%. [7]
Goa state is a classic example of this development. Many industries have been set up along National Highway 66, taking advantage of connectivity and proximity to ports on the Arabian Sea. The highway was the only source of connection between areas in the coastal districts, until the Konkan Railway was opened in 1998, between Mumbai and Mangalore.
Phase-1 or ICBR-1 project was conceived in 1999 with a target completion date of 2012 to construct 73 strategic ICBRs of nearly 4000 km length. [ 11 ] [ 4 ] It was approved in 2005. [ 11 ] Of the 73 ICBR in Phase-1, the construction of 61 roads was assigned to BRO and remaining 12 to CPWD . [ 19 ]
