U.S. Route 136 (US 136) runs east–west across central Illinois for 225.5 miles (362.9 km). US 136 enters the state from Iowa across the Keokuk–Hamilton Bridge over the Mississippi River between Keokuk, Iowa , and Hamilton, Illinois , and exits into Indiana east of Danville .

In Illinois, the designation of US 136 in 1951 replaced IL 10 from the Iowa state line in Keokuk to IL 119 in Havana, The route then followed IL 119 to an intersection with IL 1, where it traveled south to IL 10, heading east to Danville and the Indiana state line. [4] In Missouri, most of US 136 was designated as Route 4 in 1922.
Illinois's state route numbers originated in 1918 as State Bond Issues 1 through 46, used to finance the new roads. The numbers of the bond issues were then used to mark the highway routes along the way. Another series of bond issues were authorized in 1924 (47–185) and again were used to mark the roads they paid for.
State highways may be maintained by either the municipalities if within a municipality, or the Illinois Department of Transportation. [5] Should a highway run through a municipality, IDOT is authorized to choose a route through the municipality in order to make a route contiguous for through traffic.
Illinois Route 78 is a major north–south highway in western Illinois. It runs from Illinois Route 104 northwest of Jacksonville north to Highway 78 at the Wisconsin state line north of Warren. This is a distance of 215.51 miles (346.83 km). [1]
