The Committed is a 2021 novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen. It is his second novel and the sequel to his debut novel The Sympathizer (2015), which sold over one million copies and was awarded the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. The Committed was published by Grove Press on March 2, 2021. [3]
Nguyễn Nhật Ánh was born in 1955 in Quảng Nam province, Vietnam. At an early age, he attended Tiểu La, Trần Cao Vân and Phan Chu Trinh schools. In 1973, he moved to Sài Gòn to pursue a teaching career.
Viet was born in Ban Mê Thuột, South Vietnam in 1971. [17] He was the son of Linda Thanh Nguyen and Joseph Thanh Nguyen, [18] refugees from North Vietnam who had moved south in 1954. [19] [20] Viet's mother's real name is Nguyễn Thị Bảy and she is a highly influential person in his life.
The novel incorporates elements from a number of different novel genres: mystery, political, metafiction, [9] dark comedic, [10] historical, spy, and war. [11] The story depicts the anonymous narrator, a North Vietnamese mole in the South Vietnamese army , who stays embedded in a South Vietnamese community in exile in the United States.

The novel tells the tale of a woman, An Tinh Nguyen, born in Saigon in 1968 during the Tet Offensive who immigrates to Canada with her family as a child.. The book switches between her childhood in Vietnam where she was born into a large and wealthy family, her time as a boat person when she left her country for a refugee camp in Malaysia, and her life as an early immigrant in Granby, Quebec.
