Bird's Eye view, St. Peter, Minnesota, 1870. St. Peter was founded in 1853 by Captain William Bigelow Dodd, who claimed 150 acres (0.61 km 2) north of what is now Broadway Avenue. He named the new settlement Rock Bend because of the rock formation at the bend of the Minnesota River. Daniel L. Turpin platted and surveyed the town site in 1854.
It was named for Joseph Nicolas Nicollet (1786-1843), [4] a French explorer whose maps of the area had been instrumental in the territory's development. The county seat was established at Saint Peter. [5] Significant fighting occurred in the county during the 1862 Dakota War, most notably at the Battle of Fort Ridgely.

The community is located along 450th Street near 417th Avenue and Nicollet County Road 13. A post office called Oshawa was established in 1858, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1909. [2]
