From the north of Tokyo, it was divided into three sections: Kami-shuku (上宿), Naka-shuku (中宿) and Hirao-shuku (平尾宿). Kami-shuku and Naka-shuku were bounded by Itabashi, a bridge spanning the Shakujii River. The honjin and the toiya were located in Naka-shuku. The borders of Hirao-shuku spread until the vicinity of Kanmei-ji.
Although the headquarters is the Itabashi campus, the majority of students (approximately 17,000) are enrolled at the Hachiōji campus in West Tokyo. Founded in February 1969 as the American Board of Family Practice (ABFP), the group was the 20th medical specialty to be recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties and was formed out of a need to encourage medical school graduates to enter general practice.
