The Harlan Daily Enterprise was founded in 1901. It was locally owned until 1970, when it was sold to Worrell Newspapers of Charlottesville, Virginia. [3] The New York Times Company acquired the Enterprise and seven other dailies from Worrell Newspapers in 1982. [4]
The Middlesboro Daily News was first printed in 1911. [3] Its local owners sold it in 1970 to Worrell Newspapers, which sold it to The New York Times Co. in 1982. In 1990, the Times sold it and the Harlan Daily Enterprise to American Publishing Company, later renamed Hollinger International.

Larson was born in Harlan, Iowa on May 17, 1936. He received his bachelor's and law degrees in 1958 and 1960 from the University of Iowa. Larson served as county attorney for Shelby County from 1965 to 1970. Larson then served as an Iowa District Court judge from 1975 to 1978. [3] He died in Harlan on April 25, 2018, at the age of 81.
