Shrewsbury (/ ˈ ʃ r oʊ z b ər i / ⓘ SHROHZ-bər-ee, also / ˈ ʃ r uː z-/ ⓘ SHROOZ-) [1] [2] is a market town and civil parish in Shropshire, England.It is sited on the River Severn, 33 miles (53 km) northwest of Wolverhampton, 15 miles (24 km) west of Telford, 31 miles (50 km) southeast of Wrexham and 53 miles (85 km) north of Hereford.
The new museum development made use of many of the old theatre's performance and dressing spaces whilst retaining the cafe and town's visitor information centre. In its new role the Museum and Art Gallery opened to visitors in 2014 but it was not officially opened until 17 September 2015, by the Duke of Gloucester. [5]
A market hall has stood on the site since the 1260s. [2] A new market hall, replacing the original structure, was erected on the site in 1567. [1] The current building, which is thought to have been designed by Walter Hancock in the Classical Renaissance style, was completed in 1597. [1]
The Trust has its main offices and visitor centre at 193 Abbey Foregate near the centre of Shrewsbury – they occupy the former "Shrewsbury Quest" museum, on the corner of Abbey Foregate and Old Potts Way, opposite The Abbey church.
