St. Benedict the Moor High School was established in 1935 by Fr. Philip Steffes, OFM Cap, the pastor of St. Benedict the Moor Parish, a mostly African American community. [2] It served both boarding and day high school students, many of whom came from St. Benedict the Moor Elementary School, the other parish school.

Holy Redeemer's team name is the Royals and its colors are red, white, and gold. Classes began in late August 2007. By fall of that year, its students and faculty had celebrated the first Opening Liturgy at St. Nicholas Church, the first Spirit Week, and the first Junior Ring Ceremony.

In 1965 Hurricane Besty destroyed the Holy Redeemer Church, but the Holy Redeemer Elementary School continued to operate. Graduates of that elementary school included the author Keith Weldon Medley, whose book on the Plessy vs. Ferguson lawsuit was published in 2003. The school continued in operation until 1993, when it closed due to lack of funds.
