Mel Lastman Square is a public square at North York Civic Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is named after then North York mayor (and later Toronto mayor) Mel Lastman. It was officially opened on June 16, 1989, by Norman Jewison and Mel Lastman's granddaughter Brie Lastman. The architects were J. Michael Kirkland. [4]
On the north-western side Harkers was constructed for the Yorkshire Insurance Company, and the York County Savings Bank Building was also built in the mid-19th century for a local institution. Both are listed, as is the former Terry's building at 3 St Helen's Square .

In June 2015, York CAMRA listed 101 pubs on its map of the city centre, some of which are hundreds of years old. [225] These include the Golden Fleece , Ye Olde Starre Inne , noted for its sign which has spanned the street since 1733, [ 226 ] and The Kings Arms , often photographed during floods. [ 227 ]
In 1879, Exhibition Square was built on the south-eastern part of the land, with the exhibition hall to its north-west, part of which survives as the York Art Gallery.
