Summer Sonic Festival was founded in 2000 in Japan, by Naoki Shimizu, CEO of Tokyo promotions company Creativeman Productions Ltd. [3] Addressing the ever-growing demand for western music, the festival drew established and emerging musical acts of most genres to become, by 2010, Japan's biggest music event.
Producer Creativeman formed a joint venture with Live Nation Entertainment in 2013. [1] Live Nation bought full control of the venture (including Loud Park Festival) in 2014. [2] In 2018, it was announced that the event will not be held that year and will be discontinued "due to various circumstances", but had plans to return in the future. [3] [4]
The event is also referred to as "Live 8 Tokyo" or "Live 8 Japan". The concert was the first Live 8 show to start, because of Japan's earlier time zone. Attendance for the concert was at maximum capacity, but with only 10,000 people attending the show at the Makuhari Messe venue, it was one of the smallest to join the global series of events.
