Gidon was a member of Krav Maga founder Imi Lichtenfeld's first training class in the early 1960s. Gidon fought in the Six-Day War, the War of Attrition, and the Yom Kippur War. [5] After the Six-Day War Gidon resumed his competitive boxing and decided to learn more about the Krav Maga principles he had learned in the military.
Krav Maga was originally developed by Hungarian-born Israeli martial artist Imi Lichtenfeld. Having grown up in Bratislava during a time of anti-Semitic unrest, Lichtenfeld used his training as a boxer and wrestler to defend Jewish neighborhoods against attackers in the mid-to-late 1930s, becoming an experienced street fighter .
Excelling as an instructor, Perets was assigned to the top level of Krav Maga instruction in the IDF, certifying the hand-to-hand combat instructor course; having taught some of the IDF top instructors, Perets then was selected for the Shayetet 13 IDF elite naval commando unit where he built the unit's hand-to-hand combat program. [1]
He trained teams of Krav Maga instructors, who were accredited by him and the Israeli Ministry of Education. [1] He also created the Israeli Krav Maga Association (IKMA) on 22 October 1978 and the International Krav Maga Federation in 1995. [5] On 9 January 1998, Lichtenfeld died in Netanya, Israel, at the age of 87. [17]
