The 2010 Mustang GT added a more powerful version of the 4.6 L V8 seen in 2005–2009 Mustang GTs. The Mustang GT's revised V8 produced 315 bhp (235 kW) at 6000 rpm and 325 lb⋅ft (441 N⋅m) of torque at 4250 rpm. The 5-speed manual and automatic transmissions offered with the updated V8 continued unchanged from before.
When the G6 was introduced as a 2005 model year, it had two trim levels, base "V6" and sportier "GT". Both trims, however, used a 3.5 L pushrod V6 producing 200 horsepower (150 kW) and 220 lb f ·ft (300 N·m) of torque. Matched to a four-speed automatic transmission, the GT featured TAPshift, where the driver could select the gears manually.

The 2007 Mustang GT owner's manual specified the use of 3.0 L of non-synthetic Mercon ATF in the 3650, while the 2008 Mustang GT owner's manual now specifies the use of 3.0 L of Mercon-V ATF in the 3650. Dexron III/Mercon Non-Synthetic ATF seems to work best for pre-2005 Mustang GTs.
