Fitzroy (Māori: Poutūtaki) [3] is a coastal suburb of New Plymouth, in the western North Island of New Zealand.It is located to the north-east of the city centre. The area was initially named the Fitzroy Block after Governor Robert FitzRoy reduced the land purchased by the Plymouth Company from local Māori from 25,000 hectares (62,000 acres) to 1,500 hectares (3,700 acres) in the mid-1840s.
New Plymouth District covers 2,205.59 km 2 (851.58 sq mi) [1] and had an estimated population of 90,000 as of June 2024, [2] with a population density of 41 people per km 2. The New Plymouth District is the 11th largest district (out of 67) in New Zealand.
Waiwhakaiho is an industrial suburb of New Plymouth, in the Taranaki region, on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island. It is located near the mouth of the Waiwhakaiho River, on the eastern side of the city. Most housing was built in the 2010s. [3] A new walkway was also completed in Waiwhakiho in the 2010s. [4]

Whalers Gate is a suburb of New Plymouth, in the western North Island of New Zealand. It is located to the southwest of the city centre. The area was allocated to several whalers in 1847, and was called "The Whaler's Gate" at least from 1860. [3] The main street, Barrett Road, is named after Dicky Barrett, one of the whalers. [4]

The park was first created in 1881 as a forest reserve and went on to become New Zealand’s second national park, preceded by Tongariro National Park, in 1900. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] The forest reserve was created within a 6-mile (9.6-kilometre) radius around the cone of the dormant Mount Taranaki volcano .
