Born in Monroe County, Iowa to Dutch immigrants, [1] Bandstra attended New Sharon High School. He served in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1945, then returned to Iowa. He graduated in 1950 from Central College in Pella, Iowa , then received a law degree from the University of Michigan Law School in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1953.
During the American Civil War, Young served in the 8th Iowa Infantry Regiment. Young was the editor and publisher of The Monroe County Sentinel and The Albia Union newspapers. He also was a lawyer. Young served as clerk for the Monroe County District Court as a Republican. From 1873 to 1879, Young served as secretary of state of Iowa.
In all, he served in the Iowa Senate from 1874 to 1880, and 1886 to 1888. In 1890 Young moved to Des Moines and purchased a daily newspaper known as the Daily Iowa Capital or (after 1901) the Des Moines Capital. [1] In 1893, Young was an unsuccessful candidate for the Republican nomination for Governor of Iowa, losing to Frank D. Jackson. [1]

Monroe County is a county located in the south central part of the U.S. state of Iowa. In the early 20th century, it was a center of bituminous coal mining and in 1910 had a population of more than 25,000. As mining declined, people moved elsewhere for work. In the 2020 census, the population was 7,577. [1] The county seat is Albia. [2]
