Palisades Tahoe is a ski resort in the western United States, located in Olympic Valley, California, northwest of Tahoe City in the Sierra Nevada range. From its founding in 1949, the resort was known as Squaw Valley , but it changed its name in 2021 due to the derogatory connotations of the word " squaw ".
Washeshu or "Wa She Shu" is a transliteration from the Wašišiw people, the original inhabitants of this Lake Tahoe area. This mountain's toponym was officially adopted on September 8, 2022, by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names , replacing the offensive "Squaw Peak" name which had existed since at least 1899.
Granite Chief is a mountain located in the Sierra Nevada near Lake Tahoe. The mountain rises to an elevation of 9,010 feet (2,746 m) and receives consistent heavy snowfall during the winter months. [4] The summit is the highest point in the Granite Chief Wilderness [2] and marks the northwestern boundary of Palisades Tahoe. [5]
