Tahiti (English: / t ə ˈ h iː t i / ⓘ; Tahitian; [2] French pronunciation:) is the largest island of the Windward group of the Society Islands in French Polynesia. It is located in the central part of the Pacific Ocean and the nearest major landmass is Australia .
The Society Islands (French: Îles de la Société [il də la sɔsjete], [2] [3] officially Archipel de la Société [aʁʃipɛl də la sɔsjete]; [4] [5] Tahitian: Tōtaiete mā) [6] are an archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean that includes the major islands of Tahiti, Moʻorea, Raiatea, Bora Bora and Huahine.
Papeete (Tahitian: Papeʻete, pronounced [pa.pe.ʔe.te]; old name: Vaiʻete [4]) is the capital city of French Polynesia, an overseas collectivity of the French Republic in the Pacific Ocean.
Pāʻea is located on the island of Tahiti, in the administrative subdivision of the Windward Islands, themselves part of the Society Islands. [3] At the 2022 census it had a population of 12,756. [2] Tahiti's west coast freeway runs through Pāʻea and ends in Teahupoʻo down south. Going northbound would take drivers toward Papeʻete.

It was also a time of rivalry and fighting between the people of Tahiti and neighbouring islands. [12] [13] It is unclear which is the first European ship to arrive at the island of Tahiti but it is often recognised as being HMS Dolphin captained by British Captain Samuel Wallis on 18 June 1767.
