The Manhattan Beach Open is a beach volleyball tournament held annually during the summer in Manhattan Beach, California. Held on the south side of the Manhattan Beach Pier , the Open is the only professional volleyball tournament in which amateurs are able to "place into" the event through pre-qualifying rounds.
The California Beach Volleyball Association, commonly known by the acronym CBVA, was the first governing body for beach volleyball. [1] Since its founding in 1962, CBVA has coordinated local beach volleyball tournaments for players of all skill levels. In 2017, CBVA hosted nearly 1,000 tournaments at 23 beaches in 11 skill or age divisions.
The AVP suspended its operations in August 2010, canceling the five remaining tournaments in the tour calendar [12] [11] and filing for bankruptcy once more. [5] During the AVP's absence, two other domestic professional tours, the National Volleyball League (NVL) [13] and the Jose Cuervo Pro Volleyball Beach Series, [11] were formed.

The tournaments consisted of Tour Stops and formed part of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour. The series concluded with the FIVB World Tour Finals . Each tournament in the series had a prize pool of US$300,000 per gender, except for the World Tour Finals which had a prize pool of US$400,000 per gender.

First Beach Volleyball World Championships were held from 10 to 13 September 1997 in Los Angeles, California (United States). It was the first official edition of this event, after 10 unofficial championships between 1987 and 1996.
