This is threatened when Effy deals with mental health issues and attempts suicide, which is revealed to be how his mother died. Near the end of series four, Freddie is beaten and killed by Effy's counsellor, John Foster. The final episode features the gang investigating his disappearance, and it is Cook who discovers that he has been murdered.
Effy comes to see Cook in prison and tells him she loves Freddie. She admits that love is a "headfuck", but that she is enjoying it nevertheless, which Cook seems to understand. In Freddie's episode, Effy's mother has gone on an extended vacation, leaving Effy all alone. Thus Freddie and Effy stay there, doing drugs, heavy partying and having sex.
They take Effy to Norman's but after being left alone, Effy attempts suicide by slitting her wrists, only for Freddie to find her and take her to hospital. There, he meets Anthea (Morwenna Banks), Effy's mother, and tells her Effy needs her mother, not him. Cook, now escaped from custody, convinces Freddie not to give up on Effy.
