The Navistar T444E is a diesel V8 engine manufactured by Navistar International Corporation. In its use in Ford Motor Company trucks, vans, and school buses, it is the first of the Power Stroke family of diesel engines. The T444E was manufactured from 1994 to 2003, replacing the 7.3L IDI V8 designed by International Harvester.
In line with the IDI diesel, the Power Stroke was offered in three-quarter-ton and larger versions of the Ford F-Series and Econoline product ranges. The Power Stroke is an electronically controlled, direct injection engine with a 4.11 in × 4.18 in (104.4 mm × 106.2 mm) bore and stroke creating a displacement of 444 cu in (7.3 L).
The highest current state of tune, offered on the Ford Super Duty (F-250/350/450) pickup trucks, offers 430 horsepower (321 kW) at 5,500 RPM and 475 pound-feet (644 N⋅m) of torque at 4,000 RPM. [ 3 ]
Introduced for the 1983 model year, the 6.9 L diesel was the first to be offered in Ford light-duty pickups, available in the F-250 HD and F-350. Although GM pickups already had offered a diesel engine in the C10 starting in 1978 (5.7 L Oldsmobile), and across the range in 1982 (6.2 L Detroit), those engines were intended for efficiency over power.
The International Harvester Company (IHC) has been building its own proprietary truck engines since the introduction of their first truck in 1907. International tended to use proprietary diesel engines. In the 1970s, IHC built the DVT 573 V-8 diesel of 240 and 260 hp (179 and 194 kW) but these were not highly regarded and relatively few were sold.
2011–present Scorpion Diesel V8—"Power Stroke" OHV 6.7 L 32-valve DI turbo diesel (F-series only) 2020–present Godzilla V8 — Pushrod V8 7.3 L (445 cu in), gasoline, naturally aspirated, port fuel injected, variable timing, 16valve, 10.5:1 compression made for F-series Super Duty models.
The standard gasoline engine was a 5.4 L Triton V8; a 6.8 L Triton V10 was offered as an option. At its launch, the optional diesel engine was the Navistar-produced 7.3 L Power Stroke V8; during 2003 production, a Navistar-produced 6.0 L diesel V8 was introduced, again using the Power Stroke name.
Ford quickly responded by boosting the output of the Power Stroke just months after its initial release, to 400 hp (298 kW; 406 PS) and 800 lb⋅ft (1,100 N⋅m) of torque. For customers who purchased a Super Duty with the original Power Stroke V8, Ford offered a free upgrade at dealerships to the new level of output. [ 24 ]
