The Kapaleeshwarar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Shiva.It is located in Mylapore, Chennai in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.The temple was built around the 7th century CE and is an example of South Indian Architecture.
Velleeswarar is the epithet of Shiva, as "Lord of Vellee"; Vellee being the god Shukra - the guru of the asuras (demons).. According to legend, when the asura king Mahabali was about to grant Vamana—an avatar of Vishnu—land as part of his sacrifice, Shukra tried to stop him, suspecting foul play.
The temple is located at Bazaar road in the middle stretch of the popular Kutcheri road in Mylapore. It is about half a kilometer from the famous Kapaleeswarar temple. Karaneeswara means "the Lord who is the cause" in Sanskrit. Shiva is believed to be the primordial cause of the universe which is his very form.
The temple has an idol of Vishnu accompanied by his celestial consort Goddess Lakshmi. This is the birthplace of Peyalvar. It is an interesting story of how the temple was discovered from its ruins. One of the Bhakts approached Maha Periyava Sri Chandra Sekarendra Saraswathi Swamigal and sought His blessings for his new built home at Selaiyur. Maha Periyava blessed him, and told him that there is an old Siva temple lying in ruins at a nearby village called Madambakkam.
