It initially starred Richard Hart as Ellery Queen but he suddenly died of a heart attack in January 1951 and was replaced by Lee Bowman.

It is also the name of their main fictional detective, a mystery writer in New York City who helps his police inspector father solve baffling murder cases.

The DuMont series ran for 58 episodes on Thursday evenings at 9:00 pm Eastern, until October 12, 1950, when it was replaced by The Adventures of Ellery Queen. The DuMont version was sponsored by DuMont Laboratories, founded by Allen B. DuMont to produce television sets.
