"Steady Ed" Headrick [7] and Dave Dunipace are two inventors and players who greatly impacted how disc golf is played. In 1976 Headrick formalized the rules of the sport, founded the Disc Golf Association (DGA), the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA), [8] the Recreational Disc Golf Association (RDGA) and invented the first formal disc golf target [9] with chains and a basket. Disc Golf Association (DGA) is a company founded in 1976 by Ed Headrick and located in Watsonville, California.The Disc Golf Association | DGA, is the founding company of the sport of disc golf and was the acting overseeing body for the sport until the establishment of the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA).
In 2002, Headrick suffered two strokes while attending the Professional Disc Golf Association 2002 Amateur World Championships in Miami. He was able to get a medical flight back to his home in La Selva beach outside of Santa Cruz California, where he passed away soon afterward, on August 12, 2002, surrounded by his family and his friends.
The PDGA Disc Golf World Championships is one of four major championships in the sport of disc golf, along with the United States Disc Golf Championship, the European Open, and the PDGA Champions Cup. Held annually since 1982, the event crowns world champions in several divisions in the professional disc golf fields.
In November, 2010, the Circle R Disc Golf ranch hosted the Texas Teams Tournament with over 500 players and fans from across the state of Texas attending a three-day event that included disc golf, camping, and live music. Texas Teams Disc Golf Championships are non-sanctioned events and players compete for honor and not official titles.
