As of 2016, the institutional members of the World Psychiatric Association are 145 national psychiatric societies in 121 countries representing more than 250,000 psychiatrists worldwide. [2] The societies are clustered into 18 zones and four regions: the Americas, Europe, Africa & Middle East, and Asia & Australasia. [ 12 ]
The journal was established in 1959 as Recent Advances in Biological Psychiatry. [1] It obtained its current name in 1969 with volume numbering restarting at 1 [2] and is the official journal of the Society of Biological Psychiatry. The founding editor-in-chief was Joseph Wortis, who edited the journal until 1992.
The journal was established by Yifeng Xu (Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine) and co-edited by the executive editor-in-chief Jinghong Chen (Shanghai Mental Health Center). [3] As the first psychiatric journal in China, it was established in 1959 as the Shanghai Archives of Psychiatry (Chinese name: 上海精神医学).
