The first season of FLCL is a coming-of-age story and revolves around Naota Nandaba, a 12-year-old, working-class boy living with his widower father and grandfather. His life in the Japanese city of Mabase is interrupted by the arrival of a Vespa-riding maniac named Haruko Haruhara.
The father of Naota's classmate Eri Ninamori, as well as the mayor of Mabase, is caught up in a scandal involving an alleged separation with her mother. Ninamori is more focused on the class' upcoming play, Puss in Boots. She plays the lead opposite Naota, who was voted to play the cat. Naota is unenthusiastic about his role and skips rehearsal.
The episodes of the Japanese original video animation series FLCL were directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki and produced by the FLCL Production Committee, which included Gainax, Production I.G, [1] and Starchild Records. I'd like to add some information about the reference to Gundam in the Manga-style part of this episode around minute 12. In responce to Naota claiming he dosen't know what "Fooly Cooly" is Kamon (Naota's Dad) says "That's what it is. Naota's Gundam Hammer.", adding "It's that Tomino-Esque thing.
