The Muckleshoot Tribe holds Skopabsh Days each August, which is a three-day festival that features traditional arts, crafts, cooking, and clothing. Muckleshoot Tribal Schools (MTS) is a K-12 school on the Muckleshoot reservation, in unincorporated King County, Washington, with an Auburn postal address. [1] It is affiliated with the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE). [2] The school is off of Washington State Route 164. [3] In 1985 the school opened in the tribal community center.
The Muckleshoot Tribe was created by the merger of the tribes living on the Muckleshoot Reservation after the 1934 Wheeler-Howard Act (also known as the Indian Reorganization Act). They operate several tribal businesses, casinos, schools, and other services, and they work closely with state, federal, and city affairs in the Seattle area and beyond.
The Muckleshoot Reservation was established after the Puget Sound War of 1855–56. Through the 1850s and 1860s, traditional resources became less and less available. Sawmill work and employment selling natural resources began; Native men worked as loggers, in the mills, and as commercial fishers. Women sold basketry and shellfish.
