The Triple Crown of Surfing is a specialty series of professional surfing events that have been held annually since 1983 on the North Shore of Oahu, a coastline whose winter swells can reach 50 feet (15 m) in height. The Triple Crown was founded by former World Champion (1968) Fred Hemmings, and Randy Rarick, who produced the Triple Crown events.
The Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic was denied contest permits [3] for the surf calendar seasons 2006-2007, 2008-2009, 2009–2010 (run on World Bodyboarding Championships Permit 1/2 day event), and 2010-2011 (run on IBA Bodyboarding Championships Permit 1/3 day event). Exclusive access to Pipeline and other surf breaks is a very scarce resource.
The surfing competition requires at least 40-foot waves by 8 a.m. the day of the competition to move forward, and consists of two rounds with five heats in each round, according to KHON2.
Due to the geography of Sandy Beach, the surf zone spanning approximately 2,500 feet contains individual surf breaks. This makes Sandy Beach somewhat unique from other shore breaks on Oahu, such as Makapuʻu Beach Park and Waiamea Bay , where the waves largely do not break in consistent locations.
