When deeded, the forest was a late-secondary Piedmont oak-hickory forest, dominated by Quercus, Carya, Liriodendron, and Fagus. Since 1980 more than 100 species have been added to the 80 native species already present. Today the forest includes about 90% of Georgia's native trees, and a major pinetum with more than 100 conifer species.
A reorganization of the department occurred in 1935 and it was also renamed the George Foster Peabody School of Forestry. Another name change occurred in 1968 to the School of Forest Resources, and in 1991 to the Daniel B. Warnell School of Forest Resources. The Georgia Board of Regents approved the change to its current name in 2006.
Quercus marilandica is a small deciduous tree growing to 15 meters (49 feet) tall, with bark cracked into rectangular black plates with narrow orange fissures. The leaves are 7–20 centimeters (3–8 inches) long and broad, and typically flare from a tapered base to a broad three-lobed bell shape with only shallow indentations.

The South River is also known by its Muscogee Creek name, the "Weelaunee". The area includes significant disparate, undeveloped forested parcels that help protect the river and tributaries.
