Mayhem was founded in 1984 [2] by guitarist Øystein Aarseth (initially known as "Destructor", [3] later "Euronymous"), bassist and vocalist Jørn Stubberud ("Necrobutcher"), and drummer Kjetil Manheim. The band took their name from the Venom song "Mayhem with Mercy". [4]
In late 1995, Mayhem was reformed with a lineup including Hellhammer, former members Maniac (vocals) and Necrobutcher (bass), and new guitarist Rune "Blasphemer" Eriksen. The band found the incident amusing, so they based their name on it.
