Iowa State first put together a volleyball squad in 1973 under coach Gloria Crosby. Initially just playing in regional tournaments and the occasional one-off match, they began participating in the brand new Big Eight tournament in 1976. Then in 1982 the Big Eight offered volleyball as a full sport including in-season conference play.
Sandy Stewart only received an interview from one university, the University of Iowa. [1] She coached the Iowa Hawkeyes women's volleyball team from 1982-1988. [2] In Stewart's first season in 1982, the team finished with a 9-22 record. In 1983, her team finished with a record of 22-9 and she was the Big Ten Coach of the Year.

But Iowa, a huge underdog, outhit the Sun Devils 8–3 only to lose, 2–1. Iowa had the tying run thrown out at the plate in the 9th inning, and left another runner at third as the final out was made.
