It was designated as the county seat of Floyd County. According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 31.6 square miles (81.9 km 2 ), of which 30.9 square miles (80.1 km 2 ) are land and 0.73 square miles (1.9 km 2 ), or 2.29%, are covered by water.

Entering Floyd County, US 27 briefly becomes a controlled-access highway with exits serving Darlington Drive/Old Lindale Road, Dean Avenue , and East 12th Street. Continuing through Rome as Turner McCall and Martha Berry boulevards, the highway then angles west toward Chattooga County and Summerville.

In Floyd County, average traffic loads west of Rome hover around 4,000 vehicles per day, with a maximum of 5,000 in Cave Spring. Those numbers increase rapidly as the route approaches Rome, increasing to an average of about 17,000, with a peak of 30,000 in downtown Rome, where SR 53 is concurrent with US 27, SR 1, and SR 20.

The Rome Metropolitan Statistical Area in the U.S. state of Georgia, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area consisting of one county – Floyd – in Northwest Georgia. As of the 2000 census , the MSA had a population of 90,565 (though a July 1, 2009 estimate placed the population at 96,250).
