1,166. Middle Tennessee. Horizontal turners are closer to the more natural way eggs are incubated by hens, but the vertical ones fit more in a smaller space and are adequate for most eggs... it comes down mostly to amount of eggs vs less really... Aug 26, 2016. #3.

  3. Vertical (gravity) vs. horizontal (spring loaded) watering...

The horizontal nipples are far superior for resistance to freezing, I switched from the gravity ones because they were freezing even with 2 heat tapes on my pvc pipe system. I haven't had an issue with the horizontal one's freezing at all with the use of a heat tape, and I am in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

  4. Water nipples? (Vertical, Horizontal/side mount, saddle)

Winter would be buckets on stands with a deicer and horizontal nipples. 8 birds so three nipples, I would use a vertical nipple system on a pipe for summer. There will be some issues teaching them to swap but nothing difficult. Don't bother insulating the bucket. the chicks will peck at it , The deicer will run longer but should keep it above 32.

I am in the process of builing a chicken coop. I am going to be putting old wood on the outside to form a siding look. Is there a huge difference in whether or not the siding is vertical or horizontal. The coop will be enclosed inside of a run in about 2 more weeks, to keep it from direct elements. The wood siding will be going around this:

marilynszoo I've used both horizontal and vertical nipples and definitely prefer the horizontal ones. The vertical ones do sometimes stick and drip. For keeping the water from freezing I use a birdbath de-icer in the bucket; works great! chicknanny13 I use the horizontal nipples on a plastic container w/lid, LOVE IT no more dirt/shavings in the ...

For an indoor cage, pigeons are not like parrots and use horizontal space rather than vertical space. Large birdcages/flight cages or dog crates work great for pigeons. A good minimum cage size (for indoors) is 42 inches wide, 27 inches deep, and 30 inches high.

  8. Concrete Block Orientation - BackYard Chickens

    www.backyardchickens.com/threads/concrete-block-orientation.323488

These types of blocks are designed to be used with the openings vertical and filled with concrete. For a small chicken coop they should be fine without being filled but the correct orientation I would think should still be maintained. With the hollow blocks laying on their sides (openings visible) there is probably a little over 40 square ...

    www.backyardchickens.com/threads/cornish-x-vs-rainbow-freedom-rangers.728496

Again, the FR's did more free ranging than the CX; but the CX got fermented feed so one would think it'd be different than the grocer. However, the FR's have a noticeably thinner breast meat - it's not the double breast like the CX. We're fine with that. There is still plenty to go around our table.

  11. Review: Wi-Fi Enabled Automatic Chicken Coop Door by JVR

    www.backyardchickens.com/threads/review-wi-fi-enabled-automatic-chicken-coop...

That is fine for some as it can be mounted inside the coop in many cases. Mine was outside so I used a gallon jug and cut it out and glued and taped it to the side of the coop in the horizontal install. My second door is a vertical install so a bottle of apple juice upside down over the motor - sure easy for vertical install.
