Bolas: Bolas spiders are unusual orb-weaver spiders that do not spin the webs. Instead, they hunt by using a sticky 'capture blob' of silk on the end of a line, known as a ' bolas '. By swinging the bolas at flying male moths or moth flies nearby, the spider may snag its prey rather like a fisherman snagging a fish on a hook.
The website says the spider tends avoid confrontation with humans. The spider does have small fangs, but they are only strong enough to eat other insects. Joro Spider (Trichonephila clavata)
While roughly 3,000 species of spiders are found throughout the U.S., very few pose a direct threat to humans. Spider bites are rare, and medically significant incidents are even less common ...
A number of spiders can cause spider bites that are medically important. Almost all spiders produce venom but only a few are able to cause significant harm to humans. Spiders injected with venom components which cause injected humans to report pain (serotonin, histamine, phospholipase A2 and melittin) autotomize the leg, but if the injections contain venom components which do not cause pain to humans, autotomy does not occur. [49]
They also don't seem to be displacing native spiders; the Joro is frequently found in places most spiders avoid, like stoplights, gas station pumps and power lines, according to an article from ...
Spiders do not feed on humans and typically bites occur as a defense mechanism. [20] This can occur from unintentional contact or trapping of the spider. [20] Most spiders have fangs too small to penetrate human skin. [21] Most bites by species large enough for their bites to be noticeable will have no serious medical consequences. [22]
“This is one of the few species of spider that can be dangerous to people,” says Potzler. “There are approximately 2,200 bites reported each year, but there has not been a death related to a ...
