The Nissan Altima is a mid-size car manufactured by Nissan since 1992. It is a continuation of the Nissan Bluebird line, which began in 1955. The Altima has historically been larger, more powerful, and more luxurious than the Nissan Sentra but less so than the Nissan Maxima .

However, Nissan considers the Altima a step below the Maxima, making it a mid-size car itself already, ever since the 3rd Generation Altima was released in the 2002 model year. From that point in time, it pushed the Maxima into an unusual position, making Nissan classify the car as a premium mid-size (or entry-level luxury) sedan.
