Chu Lai Air Base was a military airport in Chu Lai, Vietnam, operated by the United States Marine Corps between 1965 and 1970. It was located near Tam Kỳ city, the largest city in Quảng Nam Province. Abandoned after the end of the Vietnam War, it was reopened as Chu Lai Airport in 2005.
The base was established in 1968 by the 23rd Infantry Division and was located approximately 32 km northwest of Chu Lai and 16 km southwest of Landing Zone East. [1]The base was occupied by elements of the 1st Battalion, 46th Infantry Regiment and 1st Battalion, 14th Artillery when it was attacked by the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) V-16 Sapper Battalion on the early morning of 12 May 1969.
The operation was conducted by the 198th Light Infantry Brigade, 23rd Infantry Division in cooperation and coordination with the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) 6th Regiment, 2nd Division to secure major lines of communications and the destruction of People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) and Vietcong (VC) units threatening Quảng Ngãi or the Chu Lai Base Area.
