Gerald Hatten Buss (January 27, 1933 – February 18, 2013) was an American businessman, investor, chemist, and philanthropist.He was the majority owner of the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA), winning 10 league championships that were highlighted by the team's Showtime era during the 1980s.
When Buss bought the team, the Lakers had won only one title since moving to Los Angeles. [343] In Buss' 33-plus seasons in charge of the team, the Lakers won ten NBA championships and sixteen conference championships, and missed the playoffs only twice. [344] [345] He was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010. [346]
Very fitting that this was the team Dr. Buss most enjoyed seeing his Lakers beat. With 10 championships and 16 finals appearances during his tenure as owner beginning in 1979 until his death, Dr. Buss was the most successful owner in the history of North American sports.
