It is reached by Colorado State Highway 14, which runs west off U.S. Highway 287, about 8 miles (13 km) northwest of Fort Collins, Colorado. [2] It is located in Roosevelt National Forest "in the rugged lower montane climax region typical of Colorado's Rocky Mountain eastern slope," on the north bank of the Cache la Poudre River. [2]

The Colorado state wildlife areas are managed for hunting, fishing, observation, management, and preservation of wildlife. The Colorado Parks and Wildlife division of the U.S. State of Colorado manages more than 300 state wildlife areas with a total area of more than 860 square miles (2,230 km 2 ) in the state.
The lodge is on a 6-acre (2.4 ha) complex [1] on the west side of Highway 133, approximately a mile (1.6 km) south of the turnoff to Redstone, at an elevation of 7,280 feet (2,220 m) above sea level. To the east, across the Crystal River , is Osgood Castle , the main building of the mining magnate's estate.
The Grand Lake Lodge hotel was opened in 1920 to serve tourists visiting Rocky Mountain National Park via the Trail Ridge Road, completed the same year. Located in Grand Lake, Colorado , the rustic lodge was founded by Frank Huntington and Roe Emery on land owned by the National Park Service at the edge of the park.
The site was named after archaeologists, Sigurd Olsen and Gerald Chubbuck, who discovered the bone bed in 1957. In 1958, the excavation of the Olsen-Chubbuck site was then turned over to the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History, a team led by Joe Ben Wheat, an anthropologist employed by the museum. Butterfly Lodge is a five and half room log cabin, originally constructed as a hunting lodge in 1913 for the author, James Willard Schultz.Originally a rectangular building measuring 18 feet by 24 feet, it has been expanded over the years and now covers 40 feet, 10 inches by 32 feet, 6 inches, the shorter side being the front of the cabin.
In 1955, the original lodge burned down, and Fullerton's grandson S. Baker Fullerton built the present lodge in 1956 using native wood. The lodge became the property of the Potlatch Lumber Company in 1958 when it bought the Bradley Lumber Company; it was later purchased by the Frank Lyon Company in 1970, which used the lodge for duck hunting ...
