El Dorado Hills (El Dorado, Spanish for "The Golden") is an unincorporated town and census-designated place in El Dorado County, California. Located in the Greater Sacramento region of Northern California , it had a population of 50,547 at the 2020 census , up from 42,108 at the 2010 census .

El Dorado County was one of the original counties established when California became a state. Although Coloma, the initial county seat, promised to build several new buildings to serve the county government, an observer noted in 1856 "the present buildings are not suitable in which to transact the business of the Empire county" [3] and the county seat was moved to Placerville in 1857.

In the late 1890s, the building was used for early meetings of Placerville's Seventh-day Adventist Church. [5] The building has also served as the police department, jail and a justice court.
