They were subsequently translated into English by Thomas Martyn, a professor of botany at the University of Cambridge, who added notes and corrections to the text. Martyn's translation was originally published in 1785. [2] [3] [4]
The essay was mentioned in Rousseau's 1762 book, Emile, or On Education. In this text, Rousseau lays out a narrative of the beginnings of language, using a similar literary form as the Second Discourse. Rousseau writes that language (as well as the human race) developed in southern warm climates and then migrated northwards to colder climates.
The volume was edited by authors, Christopher Kelly and Eve Grace. It includes four passages from Rousseau's Emile, and excerpts from his writings in Letter to d'Alembert, Levite of Ephraim and Émile et Sophie. Two of the letters to "Henriette" were translated for the first time by the editors for inclusion in this volume. [1]
A Discourse on the Moral Effects of the Arts and Sciences (1750), also known as Discourse on the Sciences and Arts (French: Discours sur les sciences et les arts) and commonly referred to as The First Discourse, is an essay by Genevan philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau which argued that the arts and sciences corrupt human morality.
Rousseau maintained in Emile that amour de soi is the source of human passion as well as the origin and the principle of all the other desires. [1] [2] It is associated with the notion of "self-preservation" as a natural sentiment that drives every animal to watch over its own survival. [1]
Rousseau's text is divided into four main parts: the dedication, the preface, an extended inquiry into the nature of the human being and another inquiry into the evolution of the human species within society. It also includes an appendix that elaborates primarily on eighteenth century anthropological research throughout the text. [3]
