East Hampton's first school dates back to the 17th century, where the school was one of four public buildings in a village of 50-60 homes. [9] The state-chartered Clinton Academy operated a one-room schoolhouse from about 1785 to 1881. [10] The modern school district traces back to 1894, when the first school opened on Newtown Lane. The school is named for Abraham Pierson, an ancestor of local philanthropist Margaret Olivia Slocum Sage whose provided funds in 1907 for the construction of a new school building. [1] [13] [14] Sag Harbor Elementary School, located at 68 Hampton Street, serves grades K through 5. In the 2019–20 school year, there were 384 students. [6]
Pierson Middle-High School, part of the Sag Harbor Union Free School District, is physically in East Hampton and serves Sag Harbor (which is partially within the town of Southampton). There were 535 enrolled students in grades 6-12 for the 2019–2020 school year. [ 67 ]
