Appeals from cases brought in the Northern District of Mississippi are taken to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit (except for patent claims and claims against the U.S. government under the Tucker Act, which are appealed to the Federal Circuit).
The Courthouse currently houses several judicial courtrooms and related offices, including the Third Circuit Judicial District Court, [3] and the Third Circuit District Drug Court, [4] which both serve Benton, Calhoun, Chickasaw, Lafayette, Marshall, Tippah, and Union counties. The Courthouse also contains the office of the Circuit Court Clerk. [5]
The western part of the county is within the Yazoo-Mississippi Delta. As of the 2020 census, the population was 17,000. [1] Its county seat is Lexington. [2] The county is named in honor of David Holmes, territorial governor and the first governor of the state of Mississippi and later United States Senator for Mississippi. [3]

The next meeting of the Board was held in the new settlement, and in 1837 the first county courthouse was built. The same year, G. B. Ragsdale, an early settler in the northeastern part of the county, established a stagecoach stand near what is now Water Valley. In 1848 the town of Oakland, Mississippi, was chartered on the site.
